Dickson

In 2024, Dickson Shops celebrated its 60th anniversary along with the centenary of the Canberra Aerodrome. The airfield was originally located at the site of what is now the Dickson Library and extended out to the Dickson playing fields. It only lived a short life before the development of the current airport site at Majura Valley commenced.
The shops were designed by George Clark and Don Gazzard who were Australia’s leading urban designers at the time. Their design had the community at mind, creating a pedestrian-friendly, open-air layout with the Dickson Library (now heritage listed) at the heart of the urban precinct.
The Dickson Residents Group were successful recipients of the ACT Heritage Grants program 2023-24 to research and record the fascinating history of the shops. A free brochure with three self-guided walks around Dickson can be accessed via their home page at Welcome - Dickson Residents Group.
