Kambah Woolshed

 

This is what remains of the kambah Woolshed. You can see the community garden (below left) that is where an old slab hut (centre) used to be, up against the former hayshed.

How to get there?

From the Kambah Homestead site it is a 200 m walk north on Springbett to the Woolshed.

From the Visitors Centre drive south over Commonwealth Bridge, around Parliament House then take the left turn after the Royal Australian Mint exit onto the Cotter Road overpass. Turn left onto Tuggeranong Parkway and remain on this road for 9 km. Turn right into O'Halloran Circuit and left into Springbett Street.

Why is this interesting?

Although greatly altered, this woolshed is one of the remaining buildings from the Kambah property . Nearby is the former meat house, Nissen hut and workers cottage (now the YMCA childcare).

More than 30 woolsheds still exist in the ACT, the earliest from the 1830s and latest from 1980. Many woolsheds are in use on working farms such as Lanyon, Cuppacumbalong, Elm Grove, Booroomba, Gold Creek and Callum Brae. Others can be seen at Mulligans Flat, Tuggeranong Homestead, Yarralumla, Kowen Forest, Orroral and Duntroon. 

As one of the few covered public picnic/barbeque areas in the ACT, the old Kambah Woolshed is popular for large groups. Bookings are needed.
