The sign at Deakin Shopping Centre provides a detailed timeline of Deakin’s history written by historian Ann-Mari Jordens.

The signs are part of the Deakin Heritage project, initiated by the Deakin Residents’ Association and funded by the ACT Heritage Grants program 2023-2024.

The aim of the Deakin heritage project is to document and describe heritage aspects of Deakin, emphasising its importance in the historical development and legacy of Canberra as the national capital based on Walter Burley Griffin’s designs and garden city principles.

On 28 April 2024, the first of two Canberra Tracks signs was unveiled at the Deakin Shopping Centre. The second sign at La Trobe Park (yet to be unveiled), remarks on the environmental qualities of Deakin with an emphasis on green spaces, community and recreation areas and native wildlife.
